Harrison Elementary hosts, honors family members at Veterans Day assembly

This is our flag, red, white and blue, proudly we stand, loyal and true.
Yesterday, Harrison Elementary welcomed and honored veterans who are connected to their school community for a special Veterans Day Assembly. One by one, veterans were joined by their great grandchildren, nephews, children and more, receiving a white or red rose in honor of their military service.
"Every day, we say the Pledge of Allegiance and sing our This Is Our Flag song," said Amy Fleming, Harrison principal. "Our veterans, our service members, they are why. This celebration is a recognition of their service and a way to help our students understand why we honor the flag."

After a formal recognition, students learned more about the United States flag during a Flag Ceremony, presented by the Boy Scouts of America Cub Scouts Pack 221. Students learned how American flags are cared for and how we all can recognize and respect the service of others.
"A veteran is someone who served in the Armed Forces and served their country," said Charles Rowell, Harrison computer teacher and veteran of the United States Coast Guard. "Being a veteran means you choose to help others. That is true service."
